For Colorado State University Pueblo alumna Kim Archuletta, A04, the road to graduation wasn’t traditional, but it was transformative. Today, as the elected Pueblo County Treasurer and Public Trustee, she manages public funds and serves her community with resilience, leadership, and a deep commitment to giving back. Her journey began at CSU Pueblo, where one of life’s biggest challenges became the moment that defined her future.
During her freshman year at CSU Pueblo, Kim welcomed her daughter into the world far earlier than expected. Her daughter arrived prematurely and required constant care, turning what is already a demanding time in college into an extraordinary balancing act.
Just three days after giving birth, Kim returned to class. She remembers sitting for a final exam in a business course with her newborn beside her, completing the test while also tending to her daughter.
“It wasn’t glamorous or traditional,” Kim recalls. “But it was real, and it taught me more about perseverance than any textbook ever could.”
That experience reshaped her sense of determination and identity. Determined not to become a statistic, Kim pushed forward through late nights, exhaustion, and the constant demands of caring for a newborn while finishing her coursework. Graduating under those circumstances remains one of her proudest accomplishments.
The lessons from that time, resilience, adaptability, and persistence, continue to guide her today.
Kim earned her BSBA in Business Administration (Marketing) from CSU Pueblo, a degree that built the foundation for the leadership and decision-making skills she relies on today. Courses in financial literacy, strategic thinking, and organizational management prepared her to navigate complex responsibilities and work with diverse members of the community.
While she never initially imagined a career in public office, those business skills proved invaluable. As Pueblo County Treasurer and Public Trustee, she oversees critical financial responsibilities and serves the entire county, work that requires both technical knowledge and the ability to connect with people.
Her path to public office even includes a humorous full-circle moment. The only “F” on her college transcript was in American National Politics, the very subject that now influences her daily work. Years later, she ran into her former professor at a local event and shared the irony of her journey into elected office.
“It was a reminder of how unpredictable and rewarding life can be,” she says.
Since graduating, Kim has remained deeply engaged in the Pueblo community. As an elected official and proud Latina leader, she believes community involvement is not just part of her role, it is a calling.
She frequently supports local schools and community organizations, making a point to show up for students who benefit from seeing leaders who reflect their own backgrounds and experiences.
“As a first-generation graduate, I understand how powerful representation can be,” Kim says. “I want young Latina women to know that if you can see it, you can achieve it.”
For Kim, every event she attends and every student she speaks with contributes to a larger mission of uplifting others and opening doors for the next generation.
For current students and recent graduates, Kim’s advice is rooted in the lessons she learned during her own journey.
“Don’t ever give up,” she says. “Your past does not define your future, and your challenges do not determine your potential.”
She encourages students to advocate for themselves and pursue opportunities, even when they feel uncertain.
“If you never ask, the answer will always be no,” she says. “Real growth happens when you’re willing to step outside your comfort zone.”
Kim remains closely connected to the ThunderWolf community. She regularly attends signature campus events like the President’s Gala and the First Pitch Dinner in support of CSU Pueblo Baseball, and she continues to follow ThunderWolf Football.
She also enjoys sharing her story with students in the Hasan School of Business, where her journey began. Speaking about her experiences as a first-generation graduate and now an elected official allows her to stay connected with the faculty, students, and alumni who helped shape her path.
Through leadership, service, and mentorship, Kim Archuletta continues to embody the spirit of the ThunderWolves, proving that perseverance, community, and courage can take you further than you ever imagined.
